Sylvia Ortiz Domney is a dancer turned artist. Primarily a self-taught artist. She spent 25 years in the
dance world as teacher, dancer and costume maker and left that world to painting and sculpture.
Although pastels and sculpture are her favored mediums, she is now involved with digital art forms.
Ms. Domney's work is founded on the high-impact graphics of ancient and primitive and the
spontaneity of the rich folk art traditions.
"no other art forms so completely exemplify the inherent creative force, the search for meaning
and the dignity of humanity."
She was awarded first and seconds place ribbons for pastel in the Hispanic Fine Art Exhibitions
in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2001, 2002 in New Mexico and received the Award of Excellence
in 2004 and 2006, and 2007 second place for pastels along with other awards throughout her
art career.
Her work has been juried into national exhibitions, The Contemporary Hispanic Market, part of
the Santa Fe Spanish Markets, the New Mexico Arts & Crafts Fair, NM Society of Pastel National
Shows, The Nude in Lexington, Kentucky and many exhibitions in New Mexico.
Ms. Ortiz Domney was head curator for "Through The Looking Glass, alternative pastels" in 1999 during the
International Pastel Convention in Albuquerque and again in 2000. She was curator for "The Experience Project",
a multi-media show of dance, art, and "Computer Soundscapes" - electronic music by composer Mr. Ed de Buvitz
and has worked with The De Colores Hispanic Festival in Albuquerque. She has created several magazine covers
for IMAGEN magazine of New Mexico. Some of her work has been with the Albuquerque Art Business Association
as President, the New Mexico Art League, Pastel Society of New Mexico, MEZCLA, and is the current Vice President
of The Digital Art Society of New Mexico.
Ms. Ortiz Domney has worked with Academy Award winner Trevor Greenwood on his documentary film
about The Manzanar Interment Camp and had the wonderful opportunity to work at the Charles and Ray Eames
design studios; along with her husband Bill Tondreau who
has received 3 different Academy of Motion Pictures awards and was awarded an Academy Award "Oscar"
for Scientific & Technical Achievement in 2004.
Her artwork is the private collections of New Mexican author Mr. Rudolfo Anaya, Mr. Jose Armas of IMAGEN,
Mrs. Nadine Cortez, Mrs. Dale Chapman, Dr. & Mrs. Marlies Diels, Mr. & Mrs. Ira Levin, Mr. Patrick Lujan,
Ms. Christine Trujillo, and many other private collections throughout the United States -
she loves the idea that one of her fine art prints now exist somewhere in Russia.
